CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The votes have been tallied and the results are in: the Governor has been reelected as Austin Peay State University’s official mascot.

A heated competition has been going on for the past few months at APSU. The community was asked to vote between Governor Peay X, who has been in place since 2002, and a more ‘updated’ version known as the Gov.

APSU President Alisa White announced on Twitter Thursday night that Governor Peay X was the champion.

Athletics Director Derek van der Merwe and campaign spokesman Joel Wallace were happy with the results and spoke to Tiffany and Tyler on Z Mornings to share their thoughts.

“I think it means the folks who support Austin Peay are pleased with the job that the Governor has done, the things that he stands for: tradition, culture of excellence, and things like that and they want that to continue,” Wallace said.

van der Merwe thought the campaign was an overall success.

“We wanted this to be a little bit of a drama,” he said. “It was great to see people get angry about the fact that we were considering removing the Governor from office and replacing him with a shorter, little more hunchback-looking gentleman to meet the standard of excellence of a governor. I loved the attention it got and the visibility in the community.”

However, all is not lost for the Gov. He will still serve as Lt. Governor for the school.

APSU fans can now vote for the Governor as their favorite mascot in the OVC by voting at letsgopeay.com.
