CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – If you’ve driven through the Sugar Tree subdivision off of Needmore Road during the Halloween season, you might have noticed The Bones Family.

Sarah Garcia, creator of the “Cat and Cauldron” Halloween display, has been happily hosting The Bones Family annually for the past eight years.

The Cat and Cauldron

The display on Elkmont Drive is a graveyard featuring 76 individual tombstones and over 30 skeletons. Garcia’s family and best friend come together every night to create a different scenario in which the skeletons seemingly come to life.

Some of the skeletal antics at the “Cat and Cauldron” display include cooking shows, ice-skating, and tail-gating.

“We do a different scene every single day. We’ve never repeated a scene in eight years, not once,” Garcia told Clarksville Now.

With Garcia having a background in theatre production, creating this display in her front yard started out as a way for her to express her love for production and dramatics. She started with just four skeletons.

The preparation for this October-long event starts right after Christmas for the following year.

“Everything we do here, we actually hand make,” Garcia explained.

This year’s newest addition to the graveyard is a transi tomb – also known as a “cadaver” tomb – which in medieval times was a popular, open-casket type of monument with the words, “memento mori” scrawled on the side, meaning, “reminder of death.”

Rebuilding for 2020

Garcia said that everything has been smooth sailing since the storm last year that wrecked most of her tombstones. She had to do a lot of rebuilding this year, but she says it is always worth it.

“I love it when the kids come, and they’re so excited to see Mr. Bones,” said Garcia. “They get so excited to sit on the hearse and take their picture Halloween night.”

Garcia’s biggest scene thus far has been the Masquerade Ball that appeared on the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 13. However, she tells Clarksville Now that there are even bigger ones in store for the end of the month.

You can see The Bones Family and “Cat and Cauldron” display at 2679 Elkmont Drive until the end of October.
