Contributed commentary from Carl Wilson:
Last August, my wife, Rita, and I agreed to serve as virtual mentors for our 9-year-old grandson, Jack. Jack would be entering third grade at Woodlawn Elementary School after a summer move to the Woodlawn community. After several discussions with our daughter and son-in-law, and given the status of COVID-19 infections, we collectively agreed that “virtual school” would be best for Jack. Little did we know about the challenges the school year would bring.
School year 2020-21 has been an enlightening experience. Daily involvement with the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System and the dedicated staff of professionals has given us a greater appreciation for the work they do for our kids and, ultimately, for our communities.
The teachers and staff at Woodlawn Elementary School are great! They care about the kids – traditional and virtual – and work hard to provide a safe and encouraging environment for learning. We especially want to thank Jack’s teachers, Allison Lancaster and Holly Bucy, for the professionalism, patience and good humor shown during this school year. The challenge of keeping 20-plus third-graders focused during the school day is not an easy job.
Thanks to all the CMCSS staff, including Millard House, the administrative staff, the tech staff, and especially the teachers for a job well done!
