CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Tennessee gun owners are about to have more options when applying for permits in 2020. Beginning January 1, residents will be able to apply for a conceal carry permit one of two ways.

Currently, permit holders are allowed to carry a firearm open and concealed on their person. There is a monetary fee and 8-hour class, among other background check requirements. This type of permit will continue to be available but will now be referred to as an ‘enhanced handgun permit’.

The new permit introduced in 2020 is the ‘concealed only handgun permit’. The requirements for the new permit, most notably, are it costs $35 less and only requires a 90-minute training course with no hands-on component.

Tennessee residents will now be able to take an online class for their handgun carry permit as well. This new law
allows residents to take a State approved online class to obtain their Tennessee Concealed Carry Permit. This only applies to the ‘concealed only handgun permit’.

Carrytn.com offers the new online class and is one of very few courses to have been approved by the State of Tennessee to offer the online version for this new permit type.

The Tennessee Concealed Carry Permit only allows permit holders to carry their handguns in concealment such as inside the waistband, pocket, or purse. Permit holders may not carry their handguns openly visible to the public.

Tennessee residents can now take the online class at CarryTN.com and may begin submitting their certificates of completion from the course to the State on January 1, 2020. The certification issued by CarryTN.com is valid for one year from the date of completion.

Some benefits of the online version:
You can take the class at your leisure, from the comfort of your home. The class is only 90 minutes long and you can do the class over a period of time, versus the Enhanced Carry Permit class which requires eight-hours of in person instruction in a real classroom setting. You do not have to spend any range time qualifying on a target.

Some disadvantages of the class:
You don’t get the interactive discussion as a class full of students with questions. You are limited to only carrying concealed. Those who take the eight hour in person class can obtain the Tennessee Enhanced Carry Permit which allows for both open and concealed carry.
