CLARKSVILLE, TN – For 25 years, pet therapy teams have delivered comfort and compassion to patients, families and staff at Clarksville, Tennessee’s hospital. To mark this milestone, Tender Paws President David Bilan and members of Tender Paws of Clarksville gathered alongside Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital President Randy Davis, MBA, and Volunteer Coordinator Shelby Banks to celebrate the long-standing pet therapy partnership.
The collaboration began during the days of Gateway Medical Center – now Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital (VCH) – and has remained a source of care ever since. Over the past quarter century, more than 30 pet therapy teams have volunteered at the hospital, enhancing the patient and family experience. The teams have provided moments of joy, calm and connection during some of life’s most challenging times. Tender Paws was founded by the first hospital pet therapy volunteers to provide training and support to those who want to share their pets with the hospital population.
Composed of community volunteers and their specially trained dogs, Tender Paws teams regularly visit inside the hospital, providing emotional support that complements clinical care. Their visits have become a favorite of patients and families, and they have helped reduce stress and bring smiles to VCH team members.
“This partnership represents the very best of what community and compassionate care look like,” said Banks. “For 25 years, our volunteers and their dogs have made a difference in the lives of patients, families and staff, and we are honored to continue growing this partnership.”
Davis echoed those sentiments, emphasizing the program’s enduring impact. “Tender Paws has been an essential part of our hospital’s story through multiple chapters of growth and change. Their dedication has never wavered, and their presence continues to bring comfort and healing to those we serve.”
The celebration honored not only the longevity of the partnership but also the many volunteers and therapy animals who have generously given their time over the years. As VCH looks to the future, it remains committed to continuing this valued collaboration – ensuring healing paws remain a source of comfort for many years to come.
