NASHVILLE, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Tennessee’s thousands of commuters will be relieved to learn that TDOT has completed construction on Interstate 440.
Work crews began removing signs and cones late Wednesday night, completing the $154.8 million project approximately one month ahead of schedule.
“It feels so good! We couldn’t be more thrilled that we are about to start opening lanes on 440,” said TDOT Community Relations Officer Kathryn Schulte to WKRN.
For nearly a year and a half, the area has been a sore spot for commuters due to multiple lane closures and weekend closures.
“Now we’ve got three continuous lanes throughout the corridor where previously some areas only had 2 like the bridges over I-65, that was only 2 lanes. So a lot of our time was spent over there. We connected those bridges to have their lanes in each direction that just helps eliminate some of the choke points,” said Schulte.
Along with lane improvements, the now completed project includes six new colored DMS message boards to replace the previous, outdated fixtures. The exit at 21st Avenue now has a traffic signal as well.
Over 100,000 commuters travel through the area each day.
