CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Thanks to a state grant, Clarksville will soon get two new city buses and a transfer center with restrooms for the Park and Ride lot at Exit 11.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) selected Clarksville Transit System’s proposal for funding of the projects under the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Program.

The two 35-foot, hybrid buses will act as replacements to aging vehicles that have reached the end of their lives. City spokesperson Jill Hall told Clarksville Now the project will depend on which buses reach the mileage requirement first, but most likely they will replace older hybrid buses. Hall said $1.6 million has been awarded for that project.

The new facility at the Exit 11 Park and Ride is expected to include a bathroom and mini hub/transfer center. The Park and Ride offers a place for commuters to park to travel to Nashville via WeGo, Greyhound and Groome Transportation. This grant will also amount to $1.6 million.

In total, the Clarksville Transit System has been approved to receive $3.2 million in federal CMAQ funds. A minimum 20% local match is required for the projects, however.

The Clarksville Metropolitan Planning Organization will meet on Thursday, July 10, to adopt amendments for the funds. Hall said TDOT representatives will be there as a participant in the meeting, which is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Regional Planning Commission office, 329 Main St.
