NEW YORK (AP) — It’s one of the challenges of visiting a popular tourist site: getting someone to get a decent shot of you or your group — with the landmark in the background.

If it works out, you get someone who can compose a decent keepsake for you. But if it doesn’t, you can end up a shot that’s out-of-focus — or one with your noggin chopped off.

There are a number of devices on the market that puts control of your selfies firmly in your hand. They’re known collectively as “selfie sticks” — and a growing number of people are making them the modern-day equivalent of the fanny pack: a telltale sign that you’re just passing through.

Some critics have dubbed them “narcissi-sticks” — a play on the word narcissist.

Some selfie sticks are fairly crude, others include methods to remotely trigger a camera or smartphone’s shutter to make sure you get the shot you want. They range in price from $5 to $50.
