CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Around 3:00 a.m, Sunday, July 5, a suspect became involved in an altercation with his girlfriend while in the parking lot of a business located at the 2200 block of Lowes Drive.
During this time the suspect retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and began to randomly fire his weapon as patrons were exiting the business, which was beginning to close. An off-duty police officer from Kentucky, who had just stopped by the business to meet a friend, was in the parking lot as the shooting began.
The officer tried to negotiate with the suspect in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. As the suspect appeared to have some kind of trouble with his firearm, the off-duty officer went to his vehicle and retrieved his handgun. He then began to try and negotiate with the suspect again. At this time, the suspect raised his weapon and pointed it at the off-duty officer.
In response to this, the off-duty officer fired his weapon at the suspect. The suspect then ran from the parking lot and entered a field across the street from the business. He was located in that field with a gunshot wound to his arm. He was transported to the hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
The suspect has been identified as Henry Demetrius Shannon, 29, of Clarksville. He is being charged with Domestic Assault and Aggravated Assault, with additional charges pending.
