Mary Sue Slate, of Clarksville, TN, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at the age of 92.
Sue was born in Montgomery County, TN on November 6, 1932, to the late Walter Rye Trotter and Pearl Suiter Trotter. In addition to her parents, Sue is preceded in death by her husband, James L Slate (Jim); mother-in-law Edna Mitchell Slate; sister Marjorie Trotter (Jesse) Green; brother Billy E. (Josephine) Trotter; and brother Welbon R. (Beverly) Trotter.
Sue is survived by son Neal (Cheryl) Slate, Clarksville, TN; daughter Jane Slate (Kirby Talley), Washington, DC; son Steve (Kathy) Slate, Van Leer, TN; brothers Donald (Jean) Trotter, Tampa, FL; Phil Trotter, Somerset, KY. She is well loved among her large family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Sue’s positive nature, gift of happiness, and creative talents will be missed by many.
Sue led a vibrant life in Clarksville/Montgomery County at First Baptist Church. Together with her husband Jim, they founded Barksdale Elementary PTA, served as Presidents of Greenwood Junior High, led Little League Baseball, and supported other community activities. The first woman to campaign for Mayor (1980), Sue helped pave the way for women’s leadership in Clarksville.
A celebration of life in Sue’s honor will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Neal Tarpley Parchman Funeral Home with Bill Graham and Pat VanDyke officiating. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, from 11:00 am until the hour of service at the funeral home.
