CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – A student was found with an unloaded gun at Moore Magnet Elementary School on Tuesday.

Tuesday afternoon, Moore Magnet administration received a report that a student may have been in possession of a weapon, according to a message sent to families of students by the school administration.

“After receiving this report, our SRO and school administration immediately located the suspected student and confiscated an unloaded gun,” the message stated. The School Resource Officer immediately took possession of the weapon.

The weapon was apparently brought from the student’s home. There was no ammunition, and the student did not make any threats of violence, but Moore Magnet stressed that having a weapon of any kind of school grounds is a serious offense. Possession of a firearm is a zero-tolerance offense with a mandatory one-calendar-year expulsion and is a criminal offense per state law.

Parents urged to have conversation about weapons

Moore Magnet encouraged families to take this opportunity to remind their children about the importance of immediately reporting any safety concerns at school to a teacher, SRO, administrator, or other trusted adult, and about the serious consequences of carrying a weapon on school property.

“Families, please ensure any weapons in your home are safely secured and out of the hands of children,” Moore Magnet said in their message. “Please support school safety by checking students’ backpacks and ensuring that any weapons or toy weapons of any kind are not brought to school.”
