CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Safety improvements at the intersection of Rossview Road and Rollow Lane are now complete, and as a result, the temporary stop signs are being removed.

The intersection has had limited visibility caused by elevation changes and a hillside that made it difficult for drivers to safely see oncoming traffic, particularly when turning left onto Rollow from Rossview, according to a statement from the Montgomery County Highway Department. With traffic growing in the area, several accidents occurred, and many residents reached out seeking solutions.

As an interim solution, the Tennessee Department of Transportation installed a three-way stop to reduce the risk of collisions. While this measure did improve safety, it also created traffic congestion, often causing backups extending as far as the Interstate 24 Exit 8 offramp, MCHD said.

After fielding complaints about the congestion, County Mayor Wes Golden and Highway Supervisor Jeff Bryant worked explored a long term-solution that would improve both safety and traffic flow. After an engineering study determined the required sight distance, discussions were held with the hillside’s property owner, who agreed to allow the necessary changes, MCHD said. Byard Construction then removed the portion of the hill that had been blocking visibility of oncoming traffic.

With significantly improved sight distance, TDOT has said the intersection can safely return to normal traffic flow, and they removing the stop signs and markings. “Once completed, we are confident this will reduce congestion while maintaining a safer driving environment for everyone,” MCHD said.

“This project is a strong example of local government working together, listening to public input, and taking practical steps to improve safety and quality of life in our community,” MCHD said, also thanking Byard Construction. “We appreciate the patience of residents and commuters throughout this process, and we remain committed to identifying and addressing roadway concerns across Montgomery County.
