CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – If you’re looking for a unique place to shop with a lot of hospitality, Sadie’s Country Store is where you need to be.

Tim Halbrooks says they are a family-owned business with his wife, Kimberly, sons Thayer and Tyler, along with 10-year-old Sadie, whom the store is named after.

The store’s history goes back to 1988 when Halbrooks was 10 years old and said he would drive the family tractor down the road and set up to sell corn from the family’s field. As hauling the corn became more and more work, Halbrooks decided to put a little building near the farm, and people could come and shop.

“We don’t even say this is ours; this is actually the community’s, and it’s all about giving. Anybody who leaves here is going to leave here with something. Some people are short on cash and they’ll bring it next time they come,” Halbrooks said.

Halbrooks added that nobody is a customer – they are all family. “We love to see people smile. That’s the way I was brought up, you’ve got to give to receive, and that’s why we’re here. We enjoy helping the community.”

He talked about one lady who is on a fixed income and stops by and picks up food or items from Sadie’s occasionally. She pays once a year when she gets her income tax refund check.

What’s inside the store

The store itself, which opened in 2017, is filled with snacks, clothing and trinkets of all kinds. The store is open Friday from 5-8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

On the second Saturday of each month Sadie’s has free movie nights for the kids where they set up a screen and a concession stand outside the store.

There’s also a small farmer’s market right next door that is open 24 hours a day. The market features fresh produce like corn, tomatoes, cantaloupe, watermelons, squash, homemade canned goods and more. Much of the produce the Halbrooks family grows, and some comes from the Amish.

Produce at the market can be bought with PayPal, Venmo, and check or cash, which is left in a box. It is all based on trust and honesty Halbrooks said.

Halbrooks’ wife, Kimberly, has something special she is working on at Sadie’s with free school supplies for back to school for their regular shoppers and folks who stop by.

“We have been doing lots of shopping, and it’s our way of giving back to everyone that supports us,” said Halbrooks.
