CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – On Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals clinched, at minimum, a National League wild card spot after completing the four-game sweep of their division rival Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
The last time the Cards recorded a four-game sweep at Wrigley Field was in May of 1921. This memorable series win for St. Louis also led to the elimination of their historical foe, Chicago, from National League Central contention.
However, the Cardinals weren’t done there and continue to remain red hot, slugging four home runs Monday against Arizona to win their sixth game in a row and drop their magic number to three games.
With the second-place Milwaukee Brewers set to begin a series in Cincinnati Tuesday, the Cardinals currently lead the NL Central by three and a half games with five games left to play. Their victory over the Diamondbacks pushed the Cardinal win total to 90 games on the season, a feat St. Louis hasn’t accomplished since 2015.
The Cardinals appear to be in good shape when it comes to capturing the NL Central crown, as any combination of three St. Louis wins or Milwaukee losses will clinch the division for the Redbirds.
St. Louis (90-67) takes on Arizona (80-77) at 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24.
