STEWART COUNTY, Tenn. – A Fort Campbell soldier has been charged with first degree murder after the man he allegedly assaulted died from his injuries.

The incident occurred Sunday, March 6 in Indian Mound, Tn. Investigator David Evans with the Stewart County Sheriff’s Office said an individual called 911 around 8 a.m. after seeing a person lying face down on Glen Holliday Rd.

The victim was identified as 24-year-old Seth Brabant, who had recently gotten out of the military. Throughout the course of the investigation it was determined that the suspect is Zachary Ponder, an active duty soldier at Fort Campbell. Evans said the two men had met through the military.

It is unclear at this time what led to the assault.

Ponder was arrested and originally charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault. However, the Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Vanderbilt Medical Center Thursday and informed that Brabant had died.

Ponder now faces a first degree murder charge as well as aggravated assault. He remains in custody.
