CHRISTIAN COUNTY, Ky. – The Northbound lanes of the Breathitt-Pennyrile Parkway were closed Thursday afternoon due to a single engine airplane crash in Christian County near the Hopkinsville Airport.

The Christian County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash around 1:50 p.m. and discovered a 1943 Piper airplane that had crashed on the right shoulder of the parkway. Deputies spoke with the occupants of the plane, 58-year-old Mike Creed and his son, 20-year-old Benjamin Creed, both of Hopkinsville.

The occupants and witnesses said the plane took off from the airport shortly before the crash but began to lose altitude. The pilot then made the decision to return to the airport, but was unable to make it, and attempted an emergency landing on the parkway where the plane crashed.

The father was was taken by medical helicopter to Skyline Medical Center with serious injuries. His son was treated on scene for his injuries and released. The FAA is investigating.
