CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Johnson Family would like to congratulate Ryan Hitch on being the award recipient of the Deputy Bubba Johnson Memorial Scholarship.
To be considered for the scholarship, students are required to fill out an online application answering specific questions for the scholarship. They must also submit a statement which identifies their relationship to emergency personnel and the impact on their lives. Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA and an ACT of 21 or a college GPA of 2.75.
Sixty students applied for this year’s scholarship. After a review of all sixty applications by Austin Peay State University, Hitch was awarded the scholarship.
“Deputy Johnson was a well-known public servant whom many knew, loved and respected. It is always difficult to lose someone who helped protect and serve our community for so many years. However, his legacy of community service will continue through this scholarship. I congratulate Mr. Hitch on being selected through this competitive process,” said Austin Peay President Alisa White.
The scholarship was started in memory of Deputy Bubba Johnson who died in a vehicle accident while on duty with the Sheriff’s Office on January 12, 2014. An annual 5k run is held in his memory and proceeds from the run fund the endowment for the scholarship.
“Bubba was one of those men that you would never forget if you met him,” said Sheriff Fuson.
“He dedicated his life to the service of his community and the community gave that back in the form of this scholarship to help ensure that his memory will live on for generations to come,” said Fuson. “I cannot thank the community enough for honoring Bubba by coming out to support his family and making this memorial scholarship possible.”
The Johnson family, along with Sheriff John Fuson, Austin Peay President Dr. Alisa White, and local law enforcement were present for the scholarship presentation.
The scholarship is awarded on an annual basis. To apply for the scholarship visit https://apsu.academicworks.com/opportunities/6012. The deadline to apply for next school year is March 1, 2017.
