Sammy David Shires passed away at his home with his family in Panama City Beach, Florida Saturday, April 4th, 2020.

Sammy was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to William Louis Shires and Dessie Belle Stacy Shires on January 5th, 1942. After graduation from Central high school in Murfreesboro , Sammy joined the U.S. Navy. After receiving the rank of E8 AWCS and retiring from the Navy after 23 years, he settled in Cumberland City, Tennessee where he worked for Tennessee Valley Authority for 17 years until he retired.

Sammy was an avid hiker who hiked thousands of miles across the Appalachian mountains. He enjoyed the kayaking, outdoors, exercising, reminiscing about the good old days and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Sammy leaves behind his beloved wife and high school sweet heart, Phyllis Rye Shires, of 56 years, and his sons David Russell Shires and Samuel Michael Shires (Jennifer). He also leaves behind Casey Shires Burnaine (Josh), Samuel Michael Shires II, Ellie Belle Shires and Jesi Kay Shires whom were his cherished grandchildren. Great-grandchildren who will dearly miss him are Creighton Burnaine, Cooper Burnaine, and Cortlyn Burnaine.

Predeceasing him were his parents, William and Dessie Shires, his brother, Charles Douglas Shires, his brother in law, James Bennett, and nephew Cery Bennett.

Sammy’s final wishes were to be cremated and cherished by his wife. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you honor him by enjoying the outdoors with your family.
