CLARKSVILLE, TN − The Salvation Army of Clarksville joined Montgomery County and the United Way of Clarksville on Tuesday, April 15, for a Flood Recovery Resource Fair at Kirkwood High School, supporting local families still grappling with the aftermath of floods that began in mid-February. Even weeks after the initial storms, many residents are still dealing with standing water, damaged property, and uncertain futures.
“We’re actually giving out gift cards to Walmart as well,” said Lt. Col. Neal Richardson, Corps Officer for The Salvation Army in Clarksville. “We realize there may be things you need that we can’t provide in a box.”
Richardson described the emotional and physical toll of prolonged flooding: “In these situations, you almost have to rebuild your life, because it’s been placed on hold for a period of time. When we had the tornado, it came through in 30 to 45 minutes. Flooding is kind of like this slow rolling disaster … people will be experiencing cleanup and trying to put their lives back together for months and sometimes years.”
At the April 15 event, The Salvation Army provided direct assistance to 74 individuals through interviews, supplies and gift card distribution. Items distributed included:
- Gift cards (Kroger and Walmart): 24
- Cleanup kits: 15
- Hygiene kits: 16
- Food boxes: 23
- Toddler kits: 7
Since the April 3-6 storms brought as much as 15 inches of rain to areas across Tennessee and Kentucky, The Salvation Army has been actively responding with both immediate relief and long-term support. These efforts are only possible through the generosity of our donors. 100% of disaster donations go directly to support services for flood survivors.
