CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Clarksville Country Club was filled, Thursday, October 3 with close to 225 women in attendance for the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary Purse Auction. Along with the purse auction there was a silent and live auction as well as a lunch.

It was the first event of its kind for the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary and with the success of the fundraiser there are plans for it to become an annual event. Rissa Larson with the Salvation Army said they have been looking for a key event to have every year and she felt that this was going to be it.

The women’s auxiliary had set a goal of $5,000 for their first purse auction and even though an exact total has not been determined, early figures indicate that the event raised between $11,000 and $12,000. Larson said the money raised was in great part due to their sponsors and in-kind donors.

The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary is a group of about 40 volunteers who donate their time and efforts to the work of the Clarksville Salvation Army in the community. “As the winter season approaches the weather will be getting colder. We have 66 places in our shelter for people to stay and right now we have over 50,” said Larson.

Larson added that the needs are already great. “We tend to use our money for the bus passes for the men and women that are looking for jobs. We also buy food and we do a lot of fun things for the shelter residents that they don’t get in their normal life,” Larson said.
