CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The Clarksville Salvation Army distributed gifts from its annual holiday Angel Tree Wednesday in Clarksville.

Captain Sally Love said over 50 volunteers were involved in registering and helping to distribute toys, clothing, and other items to over 600 families in the community who had qualified for the Angel Tree program.

“We’re very blessed that the community was so responsive to the Angel Tree program this year,” said Love. Love also mentioned the support of Kroger with the Angel Tree program saying each family gets a Kroger card to help with providing Christmas dinner.

A number of organizations volunteered to help with handing out the bags filled with toys and clothing and also the bicycles that many children received. Members of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary and their families, Clarksville Fire Rescue, students from Montgomery Central High School, and soldiers with Alpha Company, a sustainment distribution company with 5th Special Forces Group from Fort Campbell.

Cpt. Jeremy Beals talked about why the soldiers were helping out the Salvation Army. “The sense of civic responsibility and giving back to the community. We know this time of year is important for families. We also have soldiers and families that are in need as well, so for us it’s an opportunity to get out and contribute to the local community,” Beals said.

Each season the Salvation Army holds the Angel Tree program where people adopt an Angel off of Christmas trees throughout the community. Each Angel has information about a child in need of toys and clothing for Christmas. Those who adopt the Angels buy items on the list and turn them into the Salvation Army for the youngsters to have at Christmas.
