Ruby Faye Smitherman Cox, age 87 of Jonesboro, Ark., passed from this life on Monday, June 7, 2021, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro.

Born in Joaquin, Texas, Ruby grew up in Louisiana and was a graduate of Logansport High School. Ruby lived in Ozark, Ark., Charleston, Clarksville and Jonesboro.

She was a graduate of Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in accounting. She worked in public, private and manufacturing accounting before her retirement. Ruby was a member of First Baptist Church of Clarksville, Tenn. and enjoyed working in her vegetable garden, flower gardens and maintaining a beautiful yard.

Cox was preceded in death by her husband, Sammie Joe Cox; parents, Roscoe, Sr. and Effie Mae Wyatt Smitherman; sister, Anna Stanley and brothers, Roscoe Smitherman, Jr. and Sisrow Smitherman.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Dr. Edwin Glassell of Memphis; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen E. and Virginia Cox of Jonesboro; five grandchildren and their spouses: Stephen E. and Madeline Cox, Samuel Weston Cox, Bradley C. Glassell, Dr. Brenton E. Glassell, Gail Glassell, Dr. Andrew T. and Mackenzie Glassell and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2021, at Greenwood Cemetery in Clarksville, Tenn. with Rev. Roger Freeman officiating. There will be no visitation.

The family wishes to express deepest and most sincere thanks to Gale Maxwell of Jonesboro, who gave Ruby the greatest personal care possible in the last four years of her life. During the dark and challenging days of Covid-19, Gale was Ruby’s constant friend and protector, and that is genuinely appreciated by the family.
