CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Public attention surrounding live video of the new roundabout at Whitfield and Needmore Roads – and the resulting “Rhonda 500” – has led the City of Clarksville to shut down the show.

On Aug. 9, the city opened its first high-traffic roundabout, and since a live traffic camera was broadcasting every move, there was a lot of social media attention to traffic jams and driver errors. A Facebook page for the newly-named Rhonda the Roundabout documented the travels of some motorists who decided to take laps, calling it the Rhonda 500.

The Clarksville Police Department was not amused and warned drivers about creating a traffic hazard.

On Monday, the city took things a step further and removed public access to the live traffic camera. But that doesn’t mean the city isn’t still watching.

“The roundabout is still under 24-hour camera surveillance,” the city said in a statement Tuesday to Clarksville Now. “Public access may be restored once the roundabout’s novelty subsides.”
