CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Northeast High baseball traveled to Rossview to take on the Hawks during Military Appreciation Night. This was the first of a two-game series.
Northeast came into the contest 3-8-1, and the team had won two out of their last three games. As for Rossview, they entered the game with a 11-4 record and had won their last two contests. Before the night was up, the home side extended their winning streak with a 12-0 win.
From start to finish, the Hawks were the team that managed the game most effectively. It started with Cannon Rice, who pitched a complete game shutout. Rice was able to effectively work the strike zone, and the Eagles could not consistently make solid contact with his pitches. Alongside his five scoreless innings, the starting pitcher also totaled six strikeouts, three hits allowed and three walks.
“Rice pitched well tonight and the defense played well behind him,” said Rossview head coach Parker Holman. “Northeast has a very talented lineup, they made us work for every out. Rice did a good job of stepping up in moments that could have been momentum shifting at-bats.”
Offensive production
The next phase that worked in the Hawks’ favor was their ability to drive in runs consistently. The team scored at least one run in every inning. Holman detailed that the offensive approach coming into the game was simply to get on base. They succeeded in doing so, and this paid dividends down the stretch.
Another offensive trend that played to Rossview’s advantage was their amount of extra base hits. The team compiled five extra base hits through four inning, and sophomore infielder Brady Cooper hit two of the five. Cooper went 4 for 4 on the night with a home run, a double, five RBI’s and two runs scored.
Northeast fought until the final out, which came with the bases loaded as the Eagles tried to extend the game. Rice was able to come away with one last clutch strikeout to end the game in the fifth inning. Rossview won the game with a final score of 12-0. The two sides will meet again as they are scheduled to face off on Tuesday, April 5, at Northeast High School.
