Brie Crawford an 8th grade student at Rossview Middle School had an idea to help promote awareness to the Down syndrome population at her school. You might ask why? Brie wanted to make sure all kids were the same on this particular day. After some research she decided she wanted to bring awareness to students and faculty at her school in honor of World Down Syndrome Day.

World Down Syndrome Day is observed on the 21st day of the 3rd month, which signifies the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. This is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.

With guidance from her teacher Ms. Tara Gant, she had to present her idea to the principal and spearhead the entire fundraiser. Brie set a goal to raise $500 and organized a “crazy” sock day and those who could, donate a $1 to wear their “Crazy” socks. Through the support of the students, faculty and Beta Club, Brie reached her goal of raising $500. Since this experience Brie is now a peer mentor and volunteers in the Life Skills class at her school.
