MURFREESBORO, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – For the first time since 2014, the Lady Hawks of Rossview High School went dancing at the state basketball tournament at MTSU. There, they ran into a tough squad from Farragut High School for a quarterfinal matchup. The Lady Admirals came out on top, 50-38, to advance to the semifinals and end Rossview’s season.
Farragut’s tenacious but clean defense caused 18 turnovers, and the Lady Admirals scored just as many points off those turnovers. They also won the battle in the paint, outscoring Rossview 24-18 while notching two blocks. The two sides were pretty even in rebounding, but Rossview committed twice the fouls, 21 to 10.
First half
The game started out with both teams struggling to find their footing offensively, exchanging turnovers and buckets. Rossview held a 2-point lead for a bit, and there were five lead changes. But as Farragut settled in during the last three minutes of the first quarter, they began to grow their lead.
The Lady Admirals led 11-6, prompting a Rossview timeout, but the Lady Hawks continued turning the ball over. Farragut intercepted several passes, while others sailed out of bounds. The opening period ended with the Lady Hawks down, 13-6.
Farragut’s defense remained fierce in the second quarter with their full-court press causing the Hawks more consternation. As the Admirals caused more turnovers, they grew their lead to twelve.
Rossview’s Sydney DesRoches made a run in the final minutes of the half by hitting a three, stealing the ball, and laying one in for 5 points in about 20 seconds. She then hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead down to five, but Farragut struck right back and took a 10-point lead into halftime, 28-18.
Second half
Farragut reached their biggest lead of the night, 15 points, early in the third quarter. After this initial burst to start the half, Rossview started putting together their reply. The Lady Hawks continued to see signs of hope, with a few short runs in scoring. But Farragut stayed composed enough to keep the Lady Hawks at arm’s length. This was the only quarter where Rossview outscored Farragut, 15 to 9, and the game went into the final period with the Lady Admirals leading, 37-33.
Unfortunately for Rossview, Farragut had its best defensive quarter in the fourth, only allowing 5 points by the Hawks. All of those points came in quick succession from a determined Laci Edwards, but her score with 4:48 left in the game was the last time Rossview hit a field goal.
Farragut continued knocking down shots and free throws, winning the game, 50-38.
