CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Rossview High Hawks visited the Coyote Den at West Creek High School for a region 7-6A matchup on Friday, Sept. 6. Despite a strong first half from the Coyotes, Rossview scored 17 straight points in the second half to win, 31-7, moving to 3-0 on the year and 1-0 in the region.
Early on both defenses were stout, with four straight stops to start the game. Rossview High senior running back Chris Johnson broke off a 53-yard touchdown run to break the silence. Then, Damani Wilson also found the endzone, which led to the Hawks building a 14-0 lead over the Coyotes in the second quarter. Rossview head coach Todd Hood was proud of the execution in all three phases of the game.
“We got mean and aggressive and started knocking some people around,” Hood told Clarksville Now. “We got into some long yardage situations early, but we fixed that. A lot of running backs were cycled through tonight, and I think that depth helped us.”
While they faced a large deficit early on, West Creek did not go down quietly. Just before the half ended, Coyotes quarterback DJ Swanson connected with Zonte Berry to for six points, which brought the score 14-7 right before the half. West Creek head coach Micheal Booker knew that Rossview would be a test for hist team but was confident in his squad.
“We knew they were a good team, but we still thought we could compete,” Booker said. “We came out with a strong game plan, and we capitalized off of some different looks. We did some impressive things, but they were the better team today. We’re building, and we’re excited for what the future looks like.”
Rossview went on to pitch a shutout the last two quarters of the contest, and they also added two touchdowns offensively from Dallas Clark and Kole Phillips, ultimately winning 31-7.
Now, the Hawks are sitting at 3-0 in the early season and are looking to keep their winning streak alive against Northwest High next week. As far as Hood in concerned, it’s one week at a time.
“Well, it’s three wins, not ten,” said Hood. “We’ll go back to the drawing board and fix our mistakes. We’ll see what we can do against those guys, and we’re going to take this one week at a time. Each and every week is a big game in this region.”
Meanwhile, West Creek High is set to play Kenwood High next as the Coyotes look to get back into the win column.
