CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The Montgomery County Commission has appointed Rosalind Kurita to temporarily fill the District 22 Tennessee State Senate seat left vacant after Senator Mark Green was elected as U.S. Congressman for the state’s 7th District.

Kurita is no stranger to the political scene, having represented District 22 in the Tennessee State Senate from 1996-2008. She is also a former Montgomery County Commissioner for District 3 from 1990-1994. While in the senate she also served as Speaker pro tempore.

There were 13 rounds of voting by County Commissioners before the the field of 12 nominees was narrowed down to two and Kurita won a majority of votes over Joel Wallace. Other nominees for the senate post included Dennis Bagwell, Jeff Burkhart, Robert Edwards, Marc Harris, Stephen Lomax, Bradley Morrow, Dennis Potvin, Barry Schmittou, Frank White and Sue Ellen Yates.

Kurita talked about her appointment to the position.

“It feels wonderful, I appreciate the support. I also appreciate the opportunity to serve my community,” Kurita said. She added that she would not be seeking the office in the April election because she is retired.

Dates have been set for upcoming elections to fill the State Senate post in District 22, which encompasses Montgomery, Houston, and Stewart Counties. On March 7, special primaries will be held for both political parties and a general election will take place April 23, according to Montgomery County Administrator of Elections Elizabeth Black.

Anyone interested in qualifying for their party’s primary must register by Thursday, Jan. 24 at noon.
