CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The convicted criminal responsible for a crash that killed two Clarksville Police Department (CPD) officers will be considered for parole next month.
On June 7, 2002, Officers David Scott, 42, and Yamil Baez- Santiago, 23, were killed in a crash on the 101st Airborne Division Parkway while in pursuit of Sharfyne L. White.
Police described White as a serial robber who had just robbed a St. Bethlehem motel prior to the pursuit. The officers’ patrol car collided with another vehicle near Peachers Mill Rd. and burst into flames, trapping both officers inside.
CPD spokesman Jim Knoll said White fled the scene with no regard for the officers trapped inside the patrol car. White was found the next day in a Memphis Hotel after attending a Tyson fight.
In 2004, White was found guilty of four counts of aggravated robbery and two counts of reckless vehicular homicide and sentenced to 33 years in prison.
White will be considered for parole on October 18, 2018. If given parole, White will have served only 13 years and 10 months of his 33-year sentence. CPD publicly pushed for denials of his parole in 2014 and is doing so again.
“The deaths of David Scott and Yamil Baez-Santiago left a void in this department and the lives of the loved ones left behind,” Knoll said.
In a news release Wednesday, CPD asked the public to send letters to express their opinions on White’s upcoming parole hearing to the Tennessee Board of Parole.
Letter can be sent to:
Director of Victim Services, Tennessee Board of Parole, 404 James Robertson Parkway, Suite 1300, Nashville TN 37243. Attention: SHARFYNE WHITE (TOMAS #00383848).
