Joni Bryant on The 917 Society as part of the essay series “The Road to 250: Community Spirit in Action,” celebrating the history of unity in Clarksville ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.
The 917 Society, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, is dedicated to empowering the next generation of American citizens by fostering a deep understanding and appreciation of the U.S. Constitution. With a mission to provide every 8th grader in the United States with a free, durable pocket Constitution, the organization plays a vital role in strengthening communities and contributing to America’s success by promoting education, citizenship, patriotism and civic engagement. By equipping young people with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities, the 917 Society serves as a building block in the process of e pluribus unum – out of many, one – uniting diverse Americans under the shared principles of liberty and justice.
Mission to revive Constitution Day
The cornerstone of the 917 Society’s work is its commitment to education. Recognizing that many American students lack a comprehensive understanding of the Constitution, the organization has made it their mission to revive Constitution Day, celebrated annually on Sept. 17. Since its inception, the 917 Society has distributed pocket Constitutions to over 1 million 8th graders across all 50 states with a goal to reach 2 million for America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. Our 2026 Anniversary Pocket Constitution will be a Special Edition commemorating 1776-2026. These pocket Constitutions, often referred to as the “Blue Book,” are accompanied by classroom materials, lesson plans, quizzes and essay contests designed to engage students in learning about their government and rights. By providing these resources free of charge to teachers and students, the 917 Society ensures that civic education is accessible to all, fostering informed citizens who are prepared to uphold and defend the Constitution. This educational outreach aligns with federal mandate 108-447, which requires schools receiving federal funds to hold a Constitution Day program, and the 917 Society’s efforts make compliance both meaningful and impactful.

The 917 Society’s work also promotes citizenship and patriotism by instilling a sense of pride and responsibility in young Americans. Their programs, such as essay contests on love for America, encourage students to reflect on what it means to be an American citizen. By providing each student with a personal copy of the Constitution, the organization creates a tangible rite of passage into citizenship, inspiring students to carry these values with them as they grow.
Nonpartisan approach to unifying America
The 917 Society’s nonpartisan approach ensures that its message transcends political divides, emphasizing the Constitution as a unifying document that binds Americans together. This focus on shared principles supports the ideal of e pluribus unum, fostering a collective identity rooted in the nation’s founding values. In addition to education, the 917 Society enhances awareness and fellowship through community engagement and volunteer-driven initiatives. The organization relies entirely on private donations and a dedicated network of volunteers, including partnerships with groups like the National Amvets, Moms for Liberty, and Daughters of the American Revolution.
Events such as Constitution Day celebrations, fundraisers, and Founders’ Dinners bring together community members, educators and elected officials to celebrate the Constitution and honor those who support its preservation. For example, the 2024 fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago and the seventh annual Constitution Day Celebration featured prominent speakers and awards to recognize contributions to constitutional education. These gatherings not only raise funds, but also build a sense of community and shared purpose, strengthening the social fabric of America.
Partnership with First American Bible Project
The 917 Society’s “God and Country” campaign, in partnership with the First American Bible Project, further underscores its commitment to culture and character building. By distributing Bibles alongside Constitutions, the campaign highlights the historical and moral foundations of American governance, encouraging students to appreciate the ethical principles that underpin the nation. This initiative reinforces the idea that a strong community is built on both civic knowledge and moral integrity.
Through its multifaceted approach, the 917 Society is a vital force in making communities stronger and contributing to America’s success. By educating young people, fostering patriotism, promoting citizenship, and building fellowship, the organization ensures that the Constitution remains a living blueprint for unity and freedom. In a diverse nation, the 917 Society’s work helps forge e pluribus unum by empowering the next generation to embrace their shared heritage and responsibilities as American citizens.
