CLARKSVILLE, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Thursday, April 30, friends and family gathered to celebrate the 84th birthday of William Johnson with a special parade in front of his residence at Signature Healthcare of Clarksville.

The event celebrated not only the long-time metro firefighter, but the healthcare workers who have done so much throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

William L. Johnson served with the Nashville Metro Fire Department for 38 years, retiring as a district chief. He is also a state licensed EMT and former HAZMAT specialist.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing guidelines, many at risk individuals are currently unable to have visitors, making a traditional birthday celebration impossible. That did not slow down William’s loved ones, who held a parade in front of the building with balloons, signs and warm regards as he watched from the sidewalk.

The Clarksville Fire Department helped out as well, leading the procession in one of their fire engines.

“The Fire Department just wanted to do something small, especially for those protecting themselves inside,” said Capt. Michael Rios of Clarksville Fire Rescue. “Mr Johnson is a retired firefighter, and we always love to show our support to our brothers.”

The celebration was organized by William’s wife of 54 years, Betty Johnson, who wanted to surprise William for his birthday. The couple has spoken on the phone every day throughout the quarantine period, a Mrs Betty was excited to do something special her husband.

Mrs. Johnson also wanted to celebrate the approximately 134 workers at Signature Healthcare of Clarksville for the work they do taking care of patients. Following the parade, she brought them trays of cookies from Chik-fil-A, William’s favorite.

“They do a wonderful job,” said Mrs Johnson. We are very pleased with them. We are very happy.”
