CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The search for a missing kayaker at the Clarksville Marina was called off Wednesday after officials learned it was a false alarm.

Initially, Jerry Buchanan with the Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency said a witness saw a person in a kayak around 6:30 a.m. but called 911 after seeing that it was empty a few minutes later.

The kayak was recovered, but a person was not found.

Rescue crews and divers searched the area for several hours before it was determined that the kayak had come untied from the docks.

Doug Markham, public information officer for Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, said they believe the kayak came untied from the marina and never had a person inside.

“It was so full of stuff that a person getting in it would be nearly impossible,” he said.

Crews will still search the other bank as a precautionary measure.
