CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Austin Peay State University men’s basketball coach Matt Figger has resigned to take the head coaching job at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, according to a national sports journalist.

Yahoo Sports reporter Pete Thamel, citing unnamed sources, tweeted this afternoon that Figger was leaving the APSU program, following a four-year tenure.

APSU officials could not immediately be reached for comment Sunday afternoon.

Figger came to APSU in 2017 as the 12th head coach in program history, taking over for Dave Loos, who retired after 27 years at the helm.

In his four seasons with Austin Peay, Figger had a 76-51 record, including 49-25 in the Ohio Valley Conference, according to The Leaf-Chronicle.

This was his first head coaching position. He came to Peay from South Carolina, where he was associate head coach/recruiting coordinator for five years, helping to lead the Gamecocks to the Final Four, according to APSU Sports Information.

Prior to that, he was assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Kansas State from 2007-12 and was director of operations at Arkansas from April-June 2007.
