Contributed commentary by Congressman Mark Green on Gold Star families:
Our nation is a shining city on a hill known across the globe as the “land of the free and home of the brave.” And we have our military men and women, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, to thank for it. The families they leave behind, Gold Star spouses and children, need to know they will never be forgotten.
Under the current law, the benefits of Coast Guard Gold Star spouses are not protected in the event of a lapse in government appropriations. That is something I am dedicated to changing. Members of the Coast Guard do some of the most dangerous work across the armed forces. From protecting the United States’ economic and national security to securing our border, their work, and their sacrifices, allow us to sleep soundly at night. We must ensure that these sacrifices are not only acknowledged, but that Gold Star families are not left without crucial support in times of government shutdowns. That’s why I’m reintroducing the Protecting Gold Star Spouses Act in the 119th Congress so that these families can continue receiving stipends via the Survivor Benefits Plan (SBP) even when there is a lapse in appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security.
Every Gold Star family reminds us that freedom comes at a cost, and we must never take it for granted. As a military veteran, I know many Gold Star families that have overcome devastating loss and adversity. The last thing they need is to worry whether or not they will receive their next check.
It’s our duty and our honor to take care of America’s Gold Star spouses and families, not leave them to the whims of Washington.
Rep. Mark Green
