CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Clarksville State Rep. Jason Hodges (D) is sponsoring a bill that would aim to catch people who speed around stopped school buses.

The bill would put cameras on the outside of the buses and would record drivers who drive through the buses’ stop signs that are deployed when children are boarding and leaving the bus.

“We’ve all seen that car that ignores that stop sign,” Rep. Hodges said in a statement. “It’s dangerous for our children and a problem that all our districts face.”

Once collected, the video would be reviewed and, if needed, turned over to law enforcement officers.

According to the legislation, it would be the individual district’s decision on how many cameras to use and which buses need them the most.

The bill, HB0268, has been assigned to the House Safety and Funding Subcommittee, but has not yet been assigned a hearing date.
