CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Tennessee State Representative and Speaker Pro Tempore Curtis Johnson and Speaker of the House Beth Harwell were guests of the Clarksville Rotary Club Wednesday, June 6.
After the meeting, Johnson formally announced his bid for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives in Tennessee along with endorsing Harwell for Governor on the Republican ticket.
“I’ve worked my way up through the ranks of the house serving as Speaker Pro Tem now and I’m ready for the challenge to be speaker,” Johnson said.
He is one of, if not the first, to throw his hat in the ring for the position.
“Curtis Johnson Speaker Pro Tem has been a leader not only for Montgomery County but for the whole state and I’m honored to work with him and have his endorsement,” Harwell said.
On the subject of issues in the upcoming election, opioids was on the mind of both candidates. “Opioid addiction right now is at the top of the list. We’re having families torn apart, we’re losing family members and friends. I have never received more correspondence on any other issue than the opioid problem we have in the state,” said Johnson.
