FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. – Among the many homecomings occurring recently at Fort Campbell, one that took place on Saturday, May 25 was particularly notable because of the more than 15 soldiers being welcomed home for the first time by their newborn children along with friends and family.
One of the returning, Army Spc. Austin Spangler held his son Branson in the airplane hangar for the first time after arriving from his nine month deployment with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team “Rakkasans,” 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). Spangler then posed for a photo with the baby and his wife Maria, who said “I was just overwhelmed with absolute joy, seeing Austin hold our baby boy Benson for the first time.”
Three months after he departed for Afghanistan, Spangler was present for the birth of his son via Skype. After being able to meet in person, Spangler noted, “When I first picked him up, Benson held on to me and put his head right on my shoulder as if he knew I was his dad. It is hard to describe the feelings involved during that moment.”
