CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Queen City Disposal is the most recent business to complete the requirements to become Clarksville-Montgomery County Green Certified.
Owners Jeff Purvis and Todd Beck felt it was important for their business to participate in a City/County Program that encouraged good environmental stewardship.
“We are the largest volume hauler into Bi-County landfill, said Beck. That means we pay the County more than any other trash company in Clarksville. I know firsthand people are throwing away a lot of what can be recycled. We felt it was important to set an example by recycling in our own facility.”
Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers and City of Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan were present at the Green Ribbon Cutting to congratulate the owners and staff for their work. Bowers asked them to describe some of the changes they had made. Chris Beck, who attended the workshops and helped the company through the CMC Green Certification process, said,“We’ve conserved electricity by setting the thermostats back manually in the evenings and on weekends, turning out lights, and not turning them on in areas with sufficient natural light. We’re recycling paper, plastic, cans and cardboard in the office and are in the process of greatly reducing the amount of paper we use through our online billing option. Mileage optimization with our 14 trucks has been added as a new program managed by Clay Purvis to maximize our fuel consumption and minimize our drive time.”
Todd Beck added that paper is reused before it is sent to be recycled, and note pads are made from the blank side of unused paper. He also commented that business customers new to Clarksville-Montgomery County have an automatic expectation that Queen City Disposal will have recycling services for metal and other recyclables. “I’m glad our community can meet their expectations,” said Beck.
McMillan asked if employees are bringing some of the conservation practices home. The response was that they were working on it and that some employees bring their recyclables from home to place in the office recycling containers.
“We are now the only large, locally owned disposal service in Clarksville and work closely with Bi-County to make the most of our services for the people who live in the community,” Beck said.
