CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – It may be time to break out the garden hose and sprinkler. Public pools are expected to remain closed through at least mid-June as officials try to determine the best course of action amid concerns over social distancing.
Community pools are difficult places to enforce many of the common practices that prevent the spread of coronavirus. CDC recommended guidelines including maintaining a 6-foot distance from others, wearing a mask, and limiting social gatherings to 10 people, or 50 as phases allow for continued reopening, will prove difficult.
These concerns are compounded by the fact that pool staff, especially lifeguards, are required to come into close contact with visitors, especially in life-saving situations.
City Parks and Recreation announced on their website they hope to have a decision on community pools opening in some capacity in mid-June or the end of June. Due to CDC guidelines, splash pads will remain closed through the summer 2020 season.
The Foy Fitness Center, and Austin Peay pool, remains closed. The pool, which usually opens in April, does not have set plans to reopen at this time. The Foy Center, which also facilitates the Junior Govs summer camp, will be re-evaluating recommended guidelines at the end of June.
Tennessee State Parks has announced swimming pools at their parks will remain closed through the summer season as well.
For those craving aquatic activity, outdoor recreation options are limited. Canoe and kayak businesses, such as Tip-a-Canoe and Foggy Bottom Canoe rentals, are still preparing to open safely. Red River Canoe in Adams is advertising appointment only rentals, on a limited basis. Social distancing is practiced for shuttle services. Shuttles are often used by most rental companies as they bring customers to launch points or pick them up at designated locations.
Gov. Lee and the Economic Recovery Group announced Friday they will begin lifting restrictions on large attraction in the state. However, their guidance is for attractions that can “effectively practice social distancing with strong measures to protect both employees and customers”.
