CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The public is invited to the CMCSS School Safety and Security Public Forum Monday, March 12, 2018 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the William O. Beach Civic Hall, 350 Pageant Lane, Suite 201.
Director of Schools Millard House II, Montgomery County Sheriff John Fuson, Clarksville Police Chief Al Ansley and other officials will discuss the safety and security measures in place for students in Clarksville-Montgomery County’s public schools.
Director of Schools Millard House II gave the following statement:
“In regards to nationally publicized student walkouts during the school day on March 14 and April 20, the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System has collaborated with secondary school principals, student leaders, law enforcement, and parents. We want to ensure that students can express themselves through peaceful assembly in a way that protects the safety of every student and respects the views of every member of our school community. Student leaders have suggested that a block of time be used to write their thoughts, feelings and/or opinions about school safety.
In addition, it is important to know that disorderly conduct which disrupts school operations is not acceptable and will be handled appropriately, in accordance with our Student Code of Conduct. Students who choose to walk out of school, must be checked out per the school attendance procedure. Teachers will carry on with classroom instruction during this time period. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority.
Students may be experiencing many emotions, including anxiety, fear and anger. We encourage parents to talk to their children about how they may be feeling. Counselors and staff will be available to talk to students. Additional law enforcement will be in the proximity of the schools to enhance the safety of campuses during the time period.”
