CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – This high school boys’ basketball season has been fun to say the least. There’s been plenty of interesting storylines, including Rossview High trying to defend their district and region titles, and the addition of the Kirkwood High Cobras in their first season of play.
However, the biggest takeaway is that there’s no clear hierarchy between the teams. Here’s how they currently stack up in the Clarksville Now power rankings. All information was provided to Clarksville Now by area coaches or was recorded by Max Preps.
Rossview Hawks (11-7, 3-0 District)
Coming in at the number one overall ranking is the Rossview High Hawks, who have remained consistent and battled with powerhouses all season long.
Rossview currently sits at 11-7 on the season and are undefeated in district play (3-0). The Hawks haven’t lost a game to an inner-city opponent since the 2022 region championship.
Kirkwood Cobras (11-7, 2-1 District)
This one was a close call, but ultimately it came down to last Friday night. Kirkwood High proved they can compete with the best in the city after losing to Rossview High on a last second buzzer beater. The game before they defeated Clarksville High by double digits.
First year head coach John Stigall is trying to build his program now, and they are led by Armani Smith, who’s averaging 17 points a game as a freshman. This team has figured out their identity and could be a threat come tournament time.
Clarksville Academy Cougars (15-4, 3-2 District)
In his second season, Clarksville Academy head coach Matt Hoppe has engineered an offensive firecracker of a team. The Cougars are capable of scoring in high capacities behind junior guard Trae Rideau, who has become a leader for this team. Clarksville Academy sits at 15-4 and has inner-city victories against Northwest High and West Creek.
Northwest Vikings (11-5, 2-0 District)
The Northwest Vikings hold a record of 11-5 and have one of the best back courts in all of Clarksville with Ta’carey Monday and Jacquez Scott. The two have been producing night in and night out.
Northwest High has victories over inner-city opponents including Kirkwood High, Northeast High and they split the season series with Clarksville High. The Vikings also recently defeated Kenwood High.
Kenwood Knights (7-6, 0-2)
Up to this point in the season, the Kenwood High Knights have dealt with injury woes but have continued to find ways to win under head coach Chase Cronin.
The Knights fall to fifth on the Clarksville Now power rankings with a record of 7-7. It’s important to note Kenwood has split season series with the Clarksville High Wildcats and the West Creek High Coyotes.
Clarksville Wildcats (5-10, 0-2)
The Clarksville High Wildcats record may not look pretty, but with wins over inner-city opponents such as Northwest and West Creek, they have secured the number six overall ranking for the time being.
The Wildcats are led by midrange maestro Kellen Howard, and the team is coming off an impressive victory over Dickson County last week. While they may sit at this spot for now, don’t ever discount the postseason coaching of longtime head coach Ted Young.
West Creek Coyotes (7-9, 2-1)
In his first season with West Creek, head coach Matthew Hardaway has led his team to a record of 7-9, with a district record of 2-1.
The Coyotes sharpshooting sophomore guard Kameron Bowers has set the tone for the team throughout the 2023-24 season. West Creek is 2-4 against inner-city opponents with their wins coming against Northeast and Kenwood. Their losses came against Clarksville Academy, Clarksville High, Kenwood and Northwest.
Montgomery Central Indians (7-9, 0-0 District)
Montgomery Central picked up quality wins throughout 2023 under longtime head coach Mike Brown, which includes two victories over Stewart County. The Indians sit at 7-9 on the season but have yet to play a district opponent so as the season progresses, it’ll be interesting to see how their district plays outs.
Fort Campbell Falcons (4-5, 0-1 District)
The Fort Campbell Falcons have a record of 4-5 and have lost their only district matchup of the season. With an upcoming matchup against Montgomery Central, they will have a chance to move up the power rankings.
Northeast Eagles (0-14, 0-5 District)
The Northeast Eagles are currently looking for their first win of the season, and a large part of that is because they lost numerous starters from last year’s team to Kirkwood. The Eagles are led by first year head coach Ivard Brimley as he looks to build up the Northeast boys’ basketball program.
The Eagles will still have a chance to make a run here in district play, and potentially into the postseason.
