CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Two people were killed in a single-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes of Interstate 24 in Montgomery County early Saturday morning.
Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) has identified the victims as driver Devin Spraggins, 22, of Clarksville and passenger Terry Colgate, 20, of Clarksville.
Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash, according to a THP report.
The report also said seat belts would not have made a difference in the crash.
Details from the report say a Montgomery County deputy was traveling west on I-24 when the Camaro driven by Spraggins passed him at a high rate of speed. The deputy turned on his lights and attempted to pull over the vehicle.
The Camaro went around a commercial vehicle and came up on another passenger vehicle. When the Camaro tried to pass the car, another vehicle changed lanes, which caused Spraggins to over correct and lose control of the vehicle, which slid sideways.
The Camaro hit a tree and the vehicle broke into two pieces, killing the men inside.
THP closed a portion of I-24 Tuesday morning at the scene of the crash to continue the investigation.
