CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The Downtown Kiwanis Club of Clarksville meeting on Tuesday was filled with lots of smiles, laughter, singing of Christmas songs, and holiday spirit as 144 children from Clarksville-Montgomery County, Lafayette, Head Start were treated to the annual Kiwanis Children’s Christmas Party.

The boys and girls were ages 3-5 and each child received a bag filled with toys and a chance to talk with Santa Claus about what they wanted for Christmas.

The Clarksville Academy Cougar Choir sang Christmas songs for the yongsters and members of the Kenwood and Northwest High School Key Clubs volunteered to help pass out presents to the kids and make sure everyone had a good time.

Dan Black, Kiwanis Club President talked about why the organization enjoys helping the kids.

“Our focus is improving the lives of children in the world and this is or part of the world so we do what we can here for these kids from possibly underprivileged households. We raise money all year long to bring a little joy to their hearts and it brings a little joy to ours to be able to give them these gifts. It’s a happy time of year and we’re glad to see them happy,” Black said.

Family Service Manager for Clarksville-Montgomery County Head Start, Maritza Austin, praised the Kiwanis Club for their support.

“I’m very excited every year, we see the faces of the children, and honestly sometimes this is the only gifts they get for Christmas,” she said. “I have a lot of homeless children and this is the only thing they get.”
