Cunningham, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) With a day that luckily was not nearly as hot as the past week or so, the Central Civitan Club held the 109th Annual Lone Oak Picnic Saturday which was filled with people enjoying music, a car show, children’s activities and lots of great tasting BBQ.
In election years the picnic has a history of drawing many political candidates to speak and mingle with the crowd. With the election for Governor of Tennessee coming up in 2018, Democratic candidate for Governor, Karl Dean, spoke to those gathered highlighting education, economic opportunity, and health care in Tennessee as some of the top issues.
Though not an election year for them, Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett, Sheriff John Fuson, and Commissioner Arnold Hodges briefly spoke welcoming everyone and thanking the Central Civitan’s for their hard work in making the Lone Oak Picnic a success each year in the community.
With the money raised mainly from the sale of BBQ and a silent auction, the Civitan Club supports many community projects like Montgomery Central High, Middle, and Elementary Schools as well as Cumberland Heights Elementary. They have recently chartered a new Junior Civitan Program at Montgomery Central Middle School and the club also donates to local volunteer fire services and victims of fires.
