CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Each year communities across the country honor those who have given their lives in the service and protection of others during National Police Week, May 15-May 21.

The Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Day Ceremony was held Friday at the Clarksville Police Department with local law enforcement officials and community leaders honoring the service and sacrifice of those in law enforcement.

It was a time for the Clarksville Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and representatives from other law enforcement agencies to remember those who have fallen in the line of duty.

In 1945, Officer Kermit Nipple died while investigating a fire at a Clarksville Laundromat on 3rd St. He was killed when a wall of the building collapsed. Nipple was the first Clarksville Police Officer killed in the line of duty.

Clarksville Police Officer Kenneth Browning was shot and killed in 1974 after responding to a call of a man with a shotgun on Madison St.

Police Service Dog, King, with the Clarksville Police Department, died in 1978. He was killed while protecting his K9 handler, Ralph Prost, during a search for Burglary suspects in the New Providence area.

In 1983, Aaron Glenn was responding to a domestic disturbance call on a motorcycle. He struck the side of a vehicle that pulled out in front of him at Magic Wheels Skating Rink. The Clarksville Police Officer later died from the injuries he sustained in the accident.

David Scott and Yamil Baez-Santiago, with the Clarksville Police Department, were killed in 2002 during a vehicle accident while they were in pursuit of a robbery suspect on the 101st Airborne Division Parkway.

And, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy “Bubba” Johnson, was killed in 2014 when he lost his life in a vehicle accident on the U.S. 41-A Bypass while on duty. Johnson had also served with the Clarksville Police Department and Montgomery County EMS.
