CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Demonstrators gathered at Austin Peay State University’s Fortera Stadium and took to the streets of downtown Clarksville marching in protest of police brutality and racial injustice.
Hundreds of people, many sporting masks, carried signs with phrases like “Black Lives Matter,” “I Can’t Breathe,” or “No Justice, No Peace.” A number of people who marched addressed the crowd, including Clarksville City Councilmen Tim Chandler and David Allen.
Speakers encouraged those gathered to continue their peaceful efforts for change in the system and also to get registered and be sure to vote in the upcoming elections.
The crowd chanted “No Justice, No Peace, Prosecute the Police,” and their voices echoed off the downtown buildings. The large crowd made their way and towards the Montgomery County Courthouse and gathered around the fountain chanting”Black Lives Matter!”
Organizer of the protest Juwan Richardson called it a community event.
“We are marching against police brutality. This is to make sure that we in Clarksville, as a community, set the standard. It can still be peaceful and we can still be heard,” said Richardson
This was the second protest of the day on the Montgomery County Courthouse property both bringing attention to the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old man who died in police custody on May 25.
