CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Even though the temperature was below freezing, the streets of downtown Clarksville were filled with marchers as over 250 people joined the Clarksville Branch of the NAACP for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Commemorative March.

Marchers began at Burt Elementary School and made their way downtown to Public Square, stopping to pray in front Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts’ office, who along with his wife Cynthia were part of the march. The group then moved on to Commerce St. for a prayer in front of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Montgomery County Jail before returning to Burt school.

Local NAACP President Jimmie Garland talked about the march. “It’s a commemorative march. It’s a time for us to actually celebrate the things that happened back in the fifties, sixties and seventies. How the minorities, the blacks, marched across the nation to try to get their civil rights,” Garland said.
