Phillip Allen (Phil) Whittinghill passed away on August 25, 2024, at the age of 85, in Clarksville, Tennessee.
He was born October 26, 1938, in Nappanee, Indiana. Phil spent his entire career in banking and business, serving with the utmost integrity at the U.S. Army Intelligence Unit, the Northern Bank of Tennessee, Dickson County Bank, the National Bank of Alaska, the Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, First American Bank, Whittinghill’s, Appraisal Associates, F&M Bank, and Madison Street United Methodist Church.
Having spent most of his early life in Dickson County, Tennessee, which he favored as “the garden spot of the universe,” Phil graduated from high school at William James School in White Bluff, Tennessee. He was also a graduate of Austin Peay State University, Louisiana State University – School of Banking of the South, and the University of Wisconsin-School for Bank Administration.
Beyond his professional life, Phil was a man of many interests. He had passion for mission, study, cooking, art, travel, and spending time with his family. He enjoyed a good story to tell or to hear, had a vast intelligence and a quick sense of humor. His faith and his belief in serving others drove his dedication for the American Red Cross, Clarksville Jaycees, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, Loaves and Fishes, Band Boosters, Athletic Boosters, United Way of Clarksville, Roxy Regional Theater, United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, White Bluff United Methodist Church, Madison Street United Methodist Church, Sango United Methodist Church, Meals on Wheels and Project Transformation.
Phil is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Jill Richardson Whittinghill; children, Lacy Wilson (Jared), Lyn Whittinghill and Phillip Whittinghill, Jr. (Michelle); grandchildren, Amy Patton (Ritchie), Rachel Whittinghill (Tyler), Ellie Crain, Allison Pope (John), Francie Crain (Connor), Phillip Whittinghill, III and Jacob Whittinghill; and great-grandchildren, Andrew, Lincoln, Oliver, Jackson, Esme, Carson and Duncan. He is also survived by siblings Dina Jordan, Bob Whittinghill (Brenda), and Wade Whittinghill (Sandra); and seven nieces and nephews. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Millard and Florine Whittinghill, his mother- and father-in-law, Lacy and Evelyn Richardson, and his brothers-in-law, Bobby Jordan and Jack Richardson.
A Service of Death and Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at 4:00 PM, at Madison Street United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jared Wilson and Rev. Valarie James officiating. Interment of ashes will follow. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 from 4:00 until 6:00 PM at Neal Tarpley Parchman Funeral Home.
Phil’s life was one of faith, commitment, service, and love, and he will be forever deeply missed by his family and by all who ever knew him.
