CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Palmyra Fire Rescue Service held a cornhole tournament Saturday, September 14 which was a fundraiser for the volunteer fire service which serves the communities of Palmyra, Cumberland Heights, Shiloh, Hackberry and other areas in southern Montgomery County.

The community came out and showed its support as 14 two-person teams competed in a double elimination tournament at Hilltop Supermarket on Highway 149. Plaques and cash prizes along with of course bragging rights were awarded to the top teams in this first ever event. The firefighters were also helped out by volunteers from Baggett’s Church of God of Prophecy.

Captain Jason Smith with Palmyra Fire Rescue talked about the event. “We have a cornhole tournament that we hope will be an annual event. All of the money that is raised will go toward training and equipment for the station and our volunteer firefighters,” said Smith. Some of the funds will also go for building maintenance and other needs by Palmyra Fire Rescue.

Smith added that the firefighters were also selling pink t-shirts with a portion of the money collected supporting finding a cure for breast cancer. Other events for the department include an Easter egg hunt, a BBQ contest at Hilltop Market and a hunter’s breakfast at the fire station which is coming up in November.
