Update, 1:45 p.m.: Although road crews worked into the evening Thursday and were out early this morning to clean up from the first and second round of winter storms, road conditions and parking lots are still icy, and many side roads and neighborhood streets remain covered in snow and ice.

The city and county mayors continue to urge residents to stay home and off the roadways.

“The work done by the county, city and state road crews has been outstanding, but we live in a county that is spread out over 544 square miles. Our highway department alone maintains 750 miles of roadway. With two significant snow/ice events and extremely low temperatures, it’s a tremendous amount of work for anyone to handle,” County Mayor Jim Durrett said in a news release.

“With so much ice still on the roads and in parking lots, it is wise for us to take precautions and keep accidents to a minimum for our residents and our employees, including our public safety workers” City Mayor Joe Pitts said.

Clarksville Police reported a spike in wrecks.

“We saw quite a jump in the number of accidents last night and this morning from this second wave of winter snow and ice mix. We appreciate the citizens and groups like the Clarksville Jeep Club getting out there to help people who are stuck or who have gone off the road. The streets are still treacherous in many areas,” Chief of Police David Crockarell said.

Update, 11 a.m.: The Winter Storm Warning for Middle Tennessee has been canceled, but we’re under a Winter Weather Advisory until 6 p.m. today.

Expect mixed precipitation, with additional snow accumulations of up to 1 inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze.

“Freezing drizzle and light snow will be possible through the day,” the National Weather Service alert said. “Below freezing temperatures will continue tonight and for most through the day Friday, which will keep many area roads slick.”

Update, 10:30 a.m.: The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Middle Tennessee but has been canceled for nearby Kentucky counties.

CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Clarksville woke up Thursday to an additional 2 inches of overnight snow, covering roads that had been only recently cleared of a more icy mix.

The overnight of snow was of the softer variety, without the sleet that fell earlier in the week.

Clarksville and Montgomery County mayors have urged that residents stay home Thursday.

“It’s been several years since we’ve been hit this hard with harsh winter weather,” Montgomery County Mayor Durrett said late Wednesday. “Fortunately this does not happen often. It’s important to exercise caution when it does happen.”

“Although the road crews have worked diligently and will continue clearing roads, we still have black ice on the roads and in (city) parking lots where citizens use services,” City Mayor Joe Pitts said.

Several offices and businesses remain closed, with some schools on remote.

Montgomery and surrounding counties remain under a Winter Storm Warning through 6 p.m. today, with a total of up to 5 inches of snow expected.
